- British rule began in India in 1757 with their victory at the
Battle of Plassey. After that East India Company began exercising
its control over India and ruled over 100 years until it was
replaced by direct British rule in 1857 in the wake of Indian
Mutiny.
- India actually became independent on July 18, 1947. But the
British declared 15th August as the date, because this date marked
the 2nd anniversary of surrendering of Japanese at World War
2.
- The Independence Movement for India was begun by Gandhiji
during World War I.
- The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the National
Flag at Red Fort for the first time, which has since become a
tradition on Independence Day.
- India did not have National Anthem when it emerged as an
independent country; Jana Gana Mana was adopted as the National
Anthem of India on 24 January 1950.
- India had 562 princely states at the time of Independence.
Sardar Vallabhai Patel and his team tried to bring all these states
under one Indian map. Except for Jammu & Kashmir, Hyderabad, and
Junagarh, all others accepted to join in India.
India has shown outstanding growth since its independence.
Between all the political scenarios there have been many
path-breaking achievements and developments in every phase of the
country. India has witnessed growth in various fields including
